GUNSMOKE lasting for 21 seasons? It almost happened. Writer Jim Byrnes had written scripts for the western series 21st season when the classic was abruptly cancelled. When it happened Byrnes had already been hired by Academy Award winning producer Al Ruddy (THE GODFATHER, MILLION DOLLAR BABY) to write and produce a new mega western for television. It was inspired by the All Star Cinerama blockbuster HOW THE WEST WAS WON. But, for the new series Jim created an entirely new cast of characters and used a family name, Macahan, for the family heading into the western frontier. The network submitted numerous actors for the lead including superstar Kirk Douglas and WWII hero and actor Audie Murphy. Find out how Marshal Matt Dillon became frontiersman Zeb Macahan in Part 1 of a re-edited interview with Jim Byrnes and HWWW casting director Steve Stevens, Jr. Recorded Feb 2014 at The Autry Museum.
